CHAT launches urgent food drive to support residents during government shutdown

CHICO, Calif. — CHAT (Chico Housing Action Team) is launching an urgent food drive to help our more than 200 residents avoid hunger amid the ongoing federal government shutdown, which has resulted in the suspension of SNAP (food stamp) benefits for millions of Americans, including thousands here in Chico.

Most of CHAT’s residents are extremely low-income and depend on SNAP benefits to meet their basic food needs. Even in normal times, those benefits don’t stretch far enough. To help fill the gap, CHAT operates a Food Program that distributes groceries to our neediest residents every other week.

However, our Food Program is supplemental and not designed to replace SNAP assistance entirely. Fact is, with the suspension of federal benefits, many CHAT residents are now facing an immediate food crisis.

Beginning Monday, November 3, CHAT will begin accepting donations of nonperishable food and grocery store gift cards at our new office location:

• 1095 Nelson St., Suite 100, Chico

These donations are critical to our residents. Suggested items include rice, beans, oatmeal, canned goods, and other shelf-stable foods. Gift cards are especially helpful, allowing residents to purchase the specific foods they need.

Lizzy Young, CHAT executive director, says: “During times of crisis, our community has repeatedly come to the aid of those in need. Right now, CHAT’s residents urgently need help. We’re calling on the Chico community to come together and make sure our neighbors don’t go hungry during the government shutdown. Even dropping off a few cans or a small gift card will make a difference."
