Action News Now presents the El Rey Grand Opening Fundraiser at the El Rey Theater on Saturday, February 10th.

The Grand Opening event will showcase the exciting new changes it’s made to the interior of the room all while preserving the building’s history and majestic murals. The event will include a silent auction featuring donated items from local businesses and musical performances from some of Chico’s best bands including Mystic Roots, Northern Traditionz, Swamp Zen, and Low Flying Birds. This is an all ages event. There will be dancing as well as a no-host bar.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to the El Rey Theater to assist in improving and preserving a Chico performing arts landmark. KZFR is a proud sponsor of this event. Together We Are Community.

Live Music - 4 Bands! 8pm-Midnight

Mystic Roots Band (MRB) is a Chico, CA born, 5-piece pop reggae fusion band. With two feet
solidly in reggae, the band seamlessly juggles elements of dancehall, Hip-Hop, EDM, pop, and a
taste of rock. The band is always sharpening their evolving musical arrangements of vocal
harmonies that are made richer by the groups’ female/male dynamic. The music and lyrics are
catchy and upbeat, yet with a powerful, positive message. Attending a Mystic Roots live concert
guarantees not just music for your ears, but also a high-energy show and powerful experience
you'll never forget. MRB promotes positivity and spreads a conscious message while still having
a good time and keeping the party going!

Northern Traditionz spawned from the local Chico band, Esoteric. We have crossed into the
realm of country rock to expand our fan base and to perform a new genre of original music. In
the years we have been active, we have opened for acts such as Clint Black, The Fried Brothers,
Lucky Tubb and many more.

Swamp Zen combines the funk of James Brown, the song writing of Van Morrison, and the
winding improvisation of the Grateful Dead to create their own brand of original dance music.
They honor the jam band tradition by never playing a song the same way twice, but are
consistent in their superb musicianship and in delivering a high-energy show that always brings
people to the dance floor. Their music is never boring as it moves seamlessly between styles
including funk, jazz, Latin, country, techno, reggae, and more. Most importantly they have a
blast on stage, and this contagious attitude is spread throughout the audience to make for a
shared musical experience unlike any other.

Low Flying Birds is an original outlaw bluegrass band hailing from Chico, CA! Their music is an
enticing blend of Americana, New grass, and Country Blues, with eclectic influences. Rich threepart
harmonies and impressive musicianship bring their original compositions to life. The songs
are memorable and speak for themselves. They speak to the heart of the American experience,
evoking themes of love and beauty, but also the ills of corruption, greed, and exploitation.
The band was founded by Northern California’s preeminent rock-n-roll Rumi-bard Doug Stein
on guitar and vocals (Swamp Zen, Puddle Junction). Doug is a gifted songwriter and performer
who has been entertaining folks for nearly three decades. The band also features three amazing
young players: Dustin Rohleder on lead guitar and vocals, Clinton Woodbeck on mandolin and
vocals, and Zach Hudson on banjo and vocals. The recent addition of Curtis “The Kinductor”
Peldo on bass has completed the powerful quintet.
