Community Celebration and March in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Location: Chico City Plaza

A Beloved Community Celebration and March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ~ Chico’s annual celebration focuses on continuing the march toward Dr. King’s vision of Beloved Community

On Sunday, Jan 19th, Chicoans will gather to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., continuing an annual event that has been happening for more than 30 years.

This year the program will begin at 3p.m. in the Chico City Plaza with an Opening Ceremony, followed by a March through downtown Chico ending at Trinity United Methodist Church at 4p.m. to enjoy a multi-faceted Inspirational program and celebratory dinner. Trinity United is located at the corner of Fifth and Flume Streets in downtown Chico.

Starting with the Opening Ceremony and proceeding through the program at the church, offerings will include a lively mix of musical and dramatic presentations from all ages and diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds - Hip Hop to choir music to Reggae and beyond. Themes for the program carry forward the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, creatively reminding us that the work begun so long ago continues into the present; emphasizing the need to address the pressing issues of our time if the world is to achieve Dr. King’s vision of Beloved Community.  At the close of the program in the church will be an opportunity for socializing with a simple meal featuring the famous Joe’s BBQ and Caribbean cuisine.

Visit the Facebook Event Page for more details.

The celebration this year is co-sponsored by the MLK Unity Group, Chico Peace and Justice Center, and Trinity United Methodist Church. The MLK Unity Group is a newly formed group that has come together to build community involvement and awareness about the legacy of Dr. King and the on-going effort to achieve a just society for all peoples.  The Chico Peace and Justice Center is a local non-profit organization working for peace and justice for over thirty years. Trinity United Methodist Church has hosted Chico’s annual Martin Luther King celebration through the years.
