Pet Health Alert

Location: Regional
    • 9:00am Saturday, June 1, 20136:00pm Monday, September 30, 2013

The Butte County Public Health Authorities would like to alert the general public to the dangers of leaving a pet inside a motor vehicle during the summer. When the outdoor temperature is 85, it can take less than half an hour for it to exceed 120 degrees inside a vehicle. Leaving windows slightly ajar has little effect on a vehicle's internal temperature, a dog can only withstand a high body temperature for a short time before suffering irreversible damage.

Authorities ask that those who observe a dog in distress in a hot car to contact animal control or the police, noting the make, model and color. Businesses are encourged to download, print, and post free signs available at the website to warn patrons about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars.
